Brass Crimp
Is it Necessary to Crimp During Reloading .223 Cal. Ammunition for my AR-15?
My .223 cal. AR-15 has fired only commercial ammunition, but I want to reload my used brass. I have purchased bullets with a cannelure on them. Advice from others varies:
1)"Yes, it is best to crimp, because it helps accuracy and for the security of unfired rounds in the magazine, which otherwise could separate."
2)"No, crimping causes chamber pressure to be significantly higher, and the bullet is seated sufficiently tight in the casing without crimping."
Do you have further information on this issue? Thanks for your help and advice.
Added detail: I am using a Lee four-die set.
When loading for a semi-auto, lever action or a heavy recoiling rifle, it is often necessary to crimp.
Your AR-15 (like most semi-autos) is pretty violent with the loading process of ammunition and without a crimp, the bullet could be pushed deeper into the case, causing dangerously high chamber pressures. With a crimp, the round will be much more resistant to that happening.
Crimping is not required for most bolt actions chambered in a light to moderate recoil cartridge. If it's high recoil, lever action, or semi-auto, just crimp it. Some say crimping improves accuracy, and others say it degrades it. I crimp my .308's and I don't see a problem with it. I don't think crimping raises chamber pressures by any significant amount. You'll be okay if you don't go over-kill on the crimp.
My friend reloads for his AR and he crimps all of his rounds and usually uses max loads. He has never had a problem. You should only use bullets with a cannelure for your AR.
I've heard lots of good things about the Lee Factory Crimp tool.
